I'll toss out a question I've had. The conventional wisdom (I think) is that Lee made a huge mistake in engaging at Gettysburg; that if he had turned and headed toward Washington, the Union forces would have had to pursue him, and he could have selected a better spot (the North had the high ground at Gettysburg) to turn and fight. He would have had better terrain, he could have dug in and made the North attack his lines, and hopefully by then he would have found his wayward cavalry troops.

Is the conventional wisdom wrong?
