I'm glad you posted that. A couple of my friends-- poets who run an independent poetry press-- were invited to that event. She, like me, is not a Bush supporter and against the impending action in Iraq without solid proof of the existence of WMD's. As soon as she received the invitation, she was contacted by the organizer of the protest. She demurred, her reason being that poetry needs the support of the administration, now more than ever-- particularly an administration at best lukewarm to the NEA.

It didn't take long for Laura Bush's people to get wind of the protest plans and I don't blame them a bit for cancelling the event. But I can tell you one thing: It's a GD'ed shame that the group of proesting poets let their self-righteous indignation get in the way of the promotion of something they love, something they struggle to write and publish, something which humanizes and heals: poetry.
