If you supported SDI from day 1 and we'd spent all that money on it for 20 years, what good would it have done us?

We have spent money on it for close to 20 years and what it has gotten us is development of technologies move us closer to having an effective missile defense.

The Cold War is over. ICBM's are not our problem.

ICBMs are one of the most deadly threats to our nation. They did not disappear with the end of the cold war, instead they are spreading. 20 years from now several new countries will have them.

And Star Wars doesn't work and may never work.

Missile defense is close to being able to work against a very limited attack. Even that limited defense would help increase the security of our country.

We are far more likely to be hit by a terrorist anthrax attack or dirty bomb

Perhaps but we should try to defend against all reasonably possible large scale threats.

And in case you haven't heard we're kind of allies with Russia now.

That is putting it a bit too strongly but we are not enemies anymore. But we used to be, and could be again. The system will take years or even decades to fully deploy. We have to be prepared for possible threats in to the future not just who seems likely to attack us next Tuesday.

And China? Please do not rattle sabers at them.

Creating a defense against them, is not saber rattling, but they have rattled sabers, such as when one of their officials made a remark that the US would not want to lose LA to protect Taipei.

I dont see China wanting to commit suicide. And since everything we buy these days is made in China why would Bush want trouble with them?

It doesn't have to be Bush it could be the next president or the one after that or the one after that. But if we wait until then to build defenses they wont be ready. The lead time is very long. China would e unlikely to commit suicide , to use nukes against us but they could blackmail and bluff . Also you cannot reasonably ignore the very small possibility that they might actually use nukes. You have to prepare for you enemy's (or possible enemy's) capabilities because you can never be 100% sure of their intentions and mindset.

And again you ignore North Korea and other threats. They are not imaginary.
