Re Dunne

He has been obsessed (for lack of a better word) with two trials in the past few years - the Skakel case, and the death "mystery" of Edmond Safra.

The latter died in a fire, locked in his bathroom, about 15 meters from my home in Monte-Carlo. He had just agreed to sell Republic National Bank of New York (which he founded) to HSBC, and had taken up Monegasque nationality the week before his death.

abcnews.go.com

Add to these the rumours of Russian Mafia and Palestinian terrorists as enemies (he was Jewish), his wife Lily Safra becoming the richest woman on earth after his death, his sparkling new nationality leading to no inheritance tax (Monaco is a quasi-tax haven), Monaco police and firemen's incompetence (getting there an hour later although the whole country is basically 1.9 km sq, and then arresting the chief of security), and the nurse being arrested for setting the fire to the penthouse while claiming he was attacked by masked men; and Dominick Dunne was hooked :-)

In the two years that passed between the death of Safra and the trial of the American nurse, Dunne did not stop claiming Russian Mafia connections, as well as complicity from the Prince of Monaco (no less). Last month, the nurse confessed to having set the fire, so he could save Safra later and get a reward. Apparently he did not count on the paranoias of the old man, who locked himself in the safe room and just would not come out.

Hearing this statement, Dominick Dunne was not a happy camper :-)
