Sam Hamill, editor of the prestigious Copper Caynon Press, sits in his home office, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Port Townsend, Wash. The White House Symposium on Poetry and the American Voice was cancelled Wednesday after it was believed the event would be politicized. Hamill e-mailed friends asking for poems or statements opposing military action against Iraq. He had expected about 50 responses; hes gotten about 2,000, including contributions from W.S. Merwin, Adrienne Rich and Lawrence Ferlinghetti
