My reading all along.

Ex-addicts are far more zealous than others--their priorities change somehow. I think this may be part of the emotional mix fueling his determination. I'm not articulating the point very well, I know, but it's a slippery one.

We've been very lucky to have someone like Bush who will set aside political self-preservation for the bigger things. As you say, time will tell if he was on the right track. My instincts are that he is.
