Baraka provides an easy "proof" of why the position shouldn't be supported. gov't support of the arts has a whole bunch of implications. Here are some thoughts.

1. The artist is now in the pocket of the gov't so he can become a tool for propaganda. Don't believe it? It has happened before.

2. Since we are the "gov't", we are now being forced to support something that we may not agree with or like. Why should I be forced to subsidize someone else's luxury?

3. To make it fair, we would need to ensure that there is an appropriate ratio of right wing and left wing artists who are supported by the gov't so that the "people" are properly represented. We libertarians would be left out in the cold since we don't have any gov't representation.

4. If there is not a market that can support the "art" without gov't assistance, perhaps it doesn't deserve to be supported.

I have had my poetry published and I had a "show" with my paintings.
