You are quite right in your summary. Unfortunately, I think that Churchill was right to consider the devolution of the colonies premature. About 15 million people died in intercommunal violence during the frantic run up to Indian independence, as Muslims and Hindus fled to their respective zones (Pakistan--- including what is now Bangladesh--- and India). Since then, how many died in the Bangladeshi war of independence, or in the violence over Kashmir? Not to mention economic stagnation, the rise of fundamentalist Hinduism in India, the rise of Islamicism, and so forth. This does not even begin to touch on the misery of Africa or the turmoil in the Mideast.......
