Reagan did not have an OPEC and Iranian energy/hostage crisis to deal with. Carter also had a hostage rescue embarrassment despite the best Delta Force could do. Sandstorms in the desert. Somebody screwed up. So Reagan in a sense lucked out. Or else, some say he arranged the Iranians to hold onto hostages until after he won the election. The October Surprise. Same sort of thing as the phony energy crisis during the 2000 elections. Very suspicious shadowy stuff. Collusion with Arabs. Once the energy crisis ended, Reagan was in a position to stimulate growth. At that time we DID need supply side tax cuts. He gave them to us. Now we need consumer side. Big difference. Reagan did stare down the Soviets as they were crumbling. He upped the ante with a huge military increase and it helped them fold. His one great accomplishment. Reagan was terrible on the environment though, allowed the S+L debacle to happen and left us with enormous debts and a four year recession. The "me" generation got all excited. Greed was good. White collar crooks ran amok. The era had its pros and cons. But led to malaise and debt. Bush Sr. basically had to mop up the mess. Pay off 200+ in S+L debt Reagan could have stopped if he'd ben on the ball. Half of Reagan's cabinet was indicted for corruption of one sort or another. Reagan had Alzheimer's the last two years of his service so was basically a little out of it. Kids could pray (who cares? few kids do) and many government services like care for the mentally ill were cut. Solar power research was scrapped. Homeless people were created. The rich got richer, the poor got poorer. This led to race riots during the Bush Sr. years. If you were white, rich and Republican I suppose they were good years. And better than the Carter years thanks to the OPEC embargo and inflation. Carter by the way was left with the Vietnam War debt. That was collosal. He like Bush Sr. has to mop up. Whoever succeeds GW will also have to mop up. Big-time. Bigger time than Bush Sr. or Carter. Of course Clinton left GW with a burst dot-com bubble. Fair enough?
