While visiting my parents in Ohio, we put on a channel that was going to show the Columbia land. We were watching Mission Control. However, the NASA official kept saying that they had not had communications contact since 9am. And by 15 minutes after 9, it was disturbing that there was still no communication. Now it is common to lose communications for a short period upon re-entry. But this was clearly different.

The Columbia being essentially a glider after re-entry has only one chance to land. So when the scheduled landing time, 9:16 had passed, it was obvious that this was a tragedy. About a minute later, NASA declared that it was moving into contingency mode. I explained to my parents that this only occurs when there has been an emergency.

About 5 minutes later, CNN began to cover the event. . declaring that NASA had "lost communications" with Columbia. Then the video started rolling in, clearly showing the Columbia suddenly bursting into pieces. With that video, there were no more questions as to the fate of the shuttle and its crew.

I remember watching the Challenger explosion, while in Miami. These sort of things simply never get any easier to watch.
