Shuttle: what a tragedy - perhaps this explains something.

Apparently the shuttle was at 200,000 feet - roughly 38 miles. That's where the Mesosphere becomes the Stratosphere, which is considerably more dense. It could be that the much greater resistance and heat buildup took its toll.

In any event, my prayers for, and condolences to the the families.
