You must distinguish between the Israel lobby and the Likudnik lobby. The Likudnik lobby is the extreme right wing component of the broader Israel lobby. No President was more beholding to the Israel lobby (broadly defined) than Bill Clinton. Jews held most of the top positions in his Administration Yet Clinton never pushed to attack Iraq in a big way. Most of Jews around him were more moderate Zionists associated with the Israeli labor party. Bush's Zionists are a very different breed of cat. They are closely associated with the militant Israeli Likud party and extreme right-wing domestic think tanks like the Heritage Foundation. What is distressing here is that right wing Zionist extremists now occupy many of the top positions in the Pentagon and the National Security council despite the fact that Bush did not receive many Jewish votes. The more moderate Zionists exert great influence on the Democrat party via financial contributions, but the extreme right wing Zionists seem to dominate Republican foreign policy thinking despite that party's much smaller reliance on Zionist funds.
