If the tiles dislodged during reentry, the tremendous heat would weaken the wing's internal structure. <<< news.statesmanjournal.com >>>During launch there was a piece of the shuttle external tank that was believed to have struck the left wing and possible damaged its protective tiles, although Friday NASA officials said they did not think the damage was bad enough to cause any problem with the orbiter landing. The tiles protect the orbiter from the extreme heat of re-entry.<<<
