In the US we have a good degree of separation of religion from government. (I wont pick nits on why is "in god we trust" on the greenback). Other parts of the world, it has not happened yet - my best guess is its an evolutionary process. India is not at that stage yet, IMO. Indian politicians say some things in public, to gather the attention of the population. At the same time they also do 'behind the scenes activities' that are not really publicised. examples would be India's ties with Israel in various defence/space related arenas, India hosting a US/India joint airforce excercise to fly the F16s Vs the Sukhovs, Indias attempt to have an oil supply with Iran and a pipeline to russia.
