re: Breakthrough Ideas (continued)

On the SI Moderated Qualcomm thread, Ben Garrett indicated, after closely following 3GPP2 activities, that he believed that Qualcomm tacitly approved of China contributing some intellectual property to the new (June) and recently adopted 3GPP2 and ITU 1xEV-DV standard. This would represent a giant leap forward for China’s future in telecommunications because it aspires to become a 3G and 4G leader.

What became clear as the standard evolved, was that I could not have been more wrong in this belief.

LAS-CDMA, the proposal by LinkAir and CWTS (China Wireless Telecommunication Standards Group), was rejected as foundation technology, along with the 1xtreme proposal (sponsored by MOT, NOK, TXN, etc.) in favor of one sponsored by Q (voted by 3GPP2 members after cross-testing of proposal performance claims).

The key coding scheme for LAS-CDMA was then submitted for consideration as a component technology, and also rejected.

I noted LAS-CDMA failures in later SI posts as conditions evolved.
