I hate the idea of going to war. Death, devastation, disruption, suffering… But, what else can be done? All chatter aside, the warring camps have already formed, and lines of no return have been crossed.

Maybe... Maybe not... I think we're still catching this early enough to nip it in the bud.

The one advantage the west has over the militants is that they have NO economic hope to offer to their adherents. They simply cannot compete against Western economic models.

This may sound a bit cold-hearted, but what I'm seeking is a situation where the Muslim world is at war with itself, moderates against militants. I don't want the US to be primarily responsible for waging this war, or enacting a middle-eastern "Marshall Plan".. But we're the only ones militarily capable of imposing the kind of "order" on the region that will permit less militaristic social systems to develop amidst countries like Iraq and Syria.

But it's clear that the demographic trend in the muslim world has forced the US (and maybe Europe) to step forward..

I certainly agree with the rest of your post.. Iraq is the "keystone" to disrupting the Syria, Iraq, Iran connection.
