Why did Dems lose the mid-term? The Iraq War. Obviously.
Back in July Bush's poll numbers were slipping badly. Enron and a terrible economy were front page news. In August I happened to be listening to the wise but very cynical Dick Morris on Hannity-Colmes (maybe you saw it) and he was saying how Bush had better do something fast to get the economy off the front pages. he was asked what he would advise and he said "Iraqi blood, as soon as possible". Lo and behold a week or so later Bush (Rove) announced the necessity for immediate war with Iraq. Then he atacked the Democrats patriotism for questioning such a move. Iraq then dominated the media for months and Bush went on the longest fundraising policking binge ever. Lo and behold, they outmanoevred the divided and largely leaderless Democratic party and won. But they had to resort to things like insinuating war hero Max Cleland was helping Bin Lauden and Saddam to do it. It was a sneaky, dishonest but very effective political blitzkrieg. PS - This is the main reason I question this Iraq War. The timing and the real motives behind it. Other than that I say take Saddam out with a surgical strike to his bedroom.
