Correct, this is another example of the government blatantly lying to the public, with the news media playing a suitably obsequious lapdog role. This is why so many of us are so angry at the government and the media. It would have been just as easy and far more honorable to say that the collection of souvenirs would be considered a hindrance to the investigation of the accident and therefore the collection, sale or distribution of debris from the spacecraft would be considered theft of government property and prosecutable under standard laws.

To say that toxic chemicals would remain in large enough concentrations to harm the public is a remarkable stretch. One that only a fear-monger could love to spread.
