Larry, I believe Nutrasweet is a trademark, which the manufacturers would lose only if they didn't defend it and the word came into common generic useage. What they lost was patent protection. Patents have a finite lifespan. Intel is in no danger of losing trademark names, which are more valuable than patents in this industry.

PS i believe that the Canon copy engine is one of the very few examples of a patent holding off competition in a high tech business. Of course it gave Canon protective cover until they could ramp volume to the point where economies of scale took over.
IMHO, purchase of a box maker would be a big mistake for Intel, and I would be very surprised if it happened-Intel management is too smart.
