Zeal: Instead all eyes were riveted on the US equity mar-kets,
expectantly watching with high hopes as old market lore ven-erates
the “January Barometer”, a widespread belief that as goes
January so goes the year. Since 1940 it has been right about 3/4th
of the time. Alas though, a strong early rally in equities fizzled out
and stocks finished down. The Great Bear shredded another glim-mer
of Wall Street hope for the perma-bulls, as it has deftly done so
many times in the past few years. The bulls’ magnificent tolerance
for pain and suffering is commendable, but the Great Bear takes no
prisoners and they will be forced to capitulate in the end. The mar-kets
have always been a hard and merciless teacher for the naïve.
