I went with Starband because it was the first to offer 2 way data transfer via sat. thus eliminating the dialout request.

downloads for me averaged about 680kbps, uploads are around dialup speed but unless your uploading lots of files its not important.
the draw backs to sat internet is latency or in other words the round trip speed of light time to the sat, ground station and back which averages only about 8/10ths of a second but that can case for some timeout problems logging on to SSL sites such as brokerage accts..not that its a big problem as there are a lot of tweaks that can be done to settings to make it work better.
but if your a big down loader of music the sat companies will throttle down your connection as they don't like to see the noids on the sat bogging down on what they feel is a waste of band width...also fast action online games are out again do to excessive latency.
and if you run a network you'll need a "gateway" pc with the sat software on it between the modem and router or access point
all in all it still beats dial up, and if you get a sat system and need any tips give me a halla.
