Pakistan's problems, on the other hand, lie in subversive political and militant factions trying to destroy what democracy still remains there... There totalitarianism is trying to replace democracy. Excuse me for pointing this out, but Pakistan is not a democracy, neither is it moving toward democracy. What movement is taking place is more in the opposite direction. Pakistan is not a reliable ally against terrorism. The police and security services are riddled with Islamist sympathizers and largely inutile. Musharraf and his inner circle would like to be reliable allies, I think - the Islamists are also a threat to them - but their control is limited. We have little choice but to deal with the Pakistani government, but let's not pretend that they are something they aren't. The same might be said of Saudi Arabia.
