-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday July 28 8:59 AM EDT Company Press Release STB Systems' Impact DVD Selected for New Systems From Gateway 2000 DVD Decoder Powers the Sights and Sounds for New G-Series of Convergence Systems RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 1997--STB Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:STBI), a leading supplier of multimedia subsystem products to the OEM community, Monday announced that its new DVD decoder, the Impact DVD, will be used to bring the latest in storage capacity and video playback technology to Gateway 2000's new G-Series line of desktop systems.
The Impact DVD is standard equipment on the G6-266XL configuration, and is offered as an option on other models of the G-Series line of systems equipped with Pentium MMX or Pentium II processors. The Impact DVD from STB delivers high quality AC-3 audio and MPEG-2 video playback of a broad spectrum of DVD encoded content, including movies, interactive PC games and reference material.
DVD represents the latest in sound quality, video playback and storage capability. It incorporates AC-3 digital, surround-sound technology for crisp, vibrant sound reproduction. The MPEG-2 video offers four times better resolution than existing video capabilities for a clearer picture.
In addition, a single DVD disc holds more than two hours of video or up to 4.7 GB of data, which is the equivalent of seven compact discs. The abundance of storage space on a DVD disc allows software developers to create programs with elaborate multimedia efforts like surround sound, live-action video and 3-D graphics that will fit on a single disc.
``Gateway 2000 pioneered the PC/TV category when they partnered with STB to bring convergence technology to the original Destination system. By selecting the Impact DVD for the G-Series of desktop systems, Gateway continues to give its customers leading-edge video and sound technology,'' said J. Shane Long, STB's vice president of sales and marketing.
DVD Convergence
Based on the Mpact processor, STB's Impact DVD outputs video to a PC monitor and provides 5.1 channel stereo AC-3 audio performance. The Mpact hardware/software approach to DVD playback combines the performance benefits of hardware-based acceleration with the flexibility, scalability and cost benefits of software-based acceleration.
The Impact DVD also fully supports the industry standards for MPEG-2 video and Dolby Digital AC-3 Theater-quality digital audio. Software support for the STB Impact DVD will be provided via a Microsoft MCI driver that supports Windows 95 DirectX.
