At least one of us is confused. I thought that Fibre Channel had been adopted by the IEEE as the physical-layer standard for fiber-based gigabit ethernet in the backbone, much like the existing CDDI (copper version of FDDI) was adopted as part of the fast ethernet standard a couple of years ago. If so, then Fibre Channel isn't competing with gigabit ethernet, it's part of gigabit ethernet, but its not going into the LAN until companies pull fiber to the desktop (my option #2 from the earlier post).
