Bush asks Congress for $1 trillion defence budget
US President George W Bush has sent his proposed budget for 2004 to the Congress, boosting defence spending to an annual $1 trillion by the end of this decade.

The President's budget for this year asks for an extra $30 billion for the Defence Department.

Proposed annual increases will take the defence budget to around $1 trillion by the end of the decade.

The US already spends more money on defence than the next 20 countries combined.

This year's budget does not include any special funds for a war in Iraq, and the White House will ask Congress for extra money if it eventuates.

Congress has a record of getting bogged down in budget deliberations.

Members still have not passed last year's budget.
