Clinton would have gone down.

The group led by Gingrich was either not competent enough to complete the job, or had some tiny shred of decency that prevented them from using the win at any cost to the country tactics of Rove, Rumsfeld, and Bush. It was not because they didn't try.

The small potatoes were the charges, which is why they didn't result in anything but high public approval for Clinton.
