Judge: Man Says He Likes Being A Rapist Admitted Sex Offender Allegedly To Be Released Friday
February 3, 2003
LEBANON, Pa. -- An admitted sex offender in Lebanon County is about to be released from treatment.
In a surprising move, the judge in the case is sharing the information in what he describes as an effort to protect the community.
Judge Brad Charles released his opinion, which focuses on 20-year-old Brian Calabrese.
In 1999, while still a minor, Calabrese admitted to a number of sex crimes. Since he was charged as a minor, Calabrese is set to be released when he turns 21, which will happen Friday.
According to the opinion, after spending about three years in treatment, Calabrese showed little progress in therapy session.
The opinion lists about a dozen points that reflect Calabrese's state of mind, including that "he advised his therapist that he had specific plans to rape his counselor and that he likes being a rapist."
"If left alone with the victim, he would reoffend," the opinion also states, and added. According to the opinion, Calabrese also said: "The only thing wrong with rape is that it is against the law."
"We hope Calabrese becomes a law-abiding adult. However, his own words while in placement lead us to fear what he might do. These statements of evil intent were reported in open court. For us to hide from the public now would abrogate what we view as one of the most sacred functions of our legal system -- protecting our community from those who would do it harm," Charles concluded.
Rape crisis counselors call Charles' decision to release the information courageous.
"I think we're dealing with a loophole in the law that someone can walk through. Through no fault of their own, they've looked at the law and are saying, 'Yes, I have rights as a human being.' The problem here in our agency is victims' rights, both previous and in the future," said Gary Rusen, with the Sexual Assault Center.
There's no word if Calabrese will be returning to Lebanon. Because he was convicted as a minor, he doesn't have to register his location, as other sex offenders would have to do under Megan's Law. |
