Regarding the "until recently, the flight deck computers on the space shuttle used old 8086 chips"... Why would this really amaze anyone? The utility of the 8086 based electronics was they were reliable, end of story. If additional functionality was not required until the recent upgrades, why upgrade to a "Pentium" if it's a less stable technological platform? DWB
