without a motive (have you got one for why Israel should have wanted the Liberty sunk?

There apparently was no mention of the OTHER rationale given for the Liberty attack..

There were reports that Israelis were executing prisoners at El Arish on June 8th (General Tal's division)...

And coincidentally, at least in my research, it would appear that Tal seemed to disappear from Israeli "headlines" after the war...

Maybe you can help me out on this one Nadine...

I've searched for Tal's biography and/or autobiography, as well as any political role he played in post-1967 Israel politics. Couldn't find anything in English.

As Oren says, if Israel wanted the ship sunk, why didn't they finish sinking it?

The Saratoga was heard to answer it's Mayday. Thus, the Israeli strategy had to immediately take into account this reality, and the fact that they could no longer claim "they didn't know" it was American.

You see.. if it had been sunk with no survivors, there would have been no tales to tell and those who ordered the attack could create their own story in complete security.

It's controversial Nadine, I admit.. And you know that I'm not blaming the entire Israeli people for this, but those leaders in charge at the time.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my gut tells me this was more than just incompetence.
