99 Cents Only stores are 20k ft^2 grocery-like stores that look different than any dollar store i've ever seen.

that said, sounds like you've gotta bunch of dollar stores down there. are they 'true' dollar stores like Dollar Tree or are they 'value retailers' like Family Dollar and Dollar General (i.e. stuff isn't only a buck despite the name).
