that's the short term answer. X2 and K56Flex have short shelf lives because the eventual standard will obsolete both methods. Since both USR's TC and Ascend's Max and TNT utilize flash-upgradeable technology their respective systems will be interoperable with the standard code in place. Presumably the standard or the mfrs will have systems in place to deal with "legacy" user 56K modems that haven't been upgraded to the standard; in time they will have to be upgraded and in some instances having an early K56Flex modem will be a problem for the user.
