As it turns out, Bill, on Monday night the city - through the LMDC (Lower Manhattan Development Corp/Committee?) - selected two designs as finalists. Both of which are lousy, IMO. In most NYer's opinions, in fact. Then again, the considerations of the owner - Silverstein, unless the proposed swap with space out in LaGuardia (?) takes place - should be paramount. So, it looks like we're going to have to deal with what they decide to plop down there.
I, personally, want a functional celebration of the high stress, cell phone, fortune seeking, fast food scarfing, beer drinking, SUV driving, weekend athlete, materialistic culture that is downtown - as equally in financial professionals as in cops and firefighters - and, philosophically (if not in implementation) is the very stuff that this country is built upon. The pioneer spirit, maverick capitalism...you get the idea.
That which, unable to replicate or reap the benefits of, other parties seek to damage or destroy. And I'm not just talking about terrorists or foreign nations, here.
'World Cultural Center' my ass.
