So, how does Powell's presentation affect going to war with Iraq? First off, there is no point to nit-picking what Powell presented. You either believe it or you don't. As far as this board goes, I would be surprised if anyone changed their opinion.
To me, the key is what the American Public thought of it. We know that a slight majority is now in place in favor of invading Iraq. This presentation was about what we expected on the facts. What really makes the difference, IMO, is Powell giving it. Powell is so believable that I would amazed if this did not "spike" an even higher percentage of Americans to favor the Administration's position. And it will certainly solidify the ones who feel that our course is right. Those that are solid in opposition will remain so.
It is TSTT on Foreign reaction. What is being said, at the moment, at the UN, was decided upon by the various Governments before today. Any changes in position will not come before the end of the week, and probably not for at least 10 days. I strongly doubt if France and Germany will change their position. But if Powell can't move them, nobody can.
We now have the Washington Post backing the Admin. The New York Times will never back the Admin, IMO. I think some other major papers will move to the Admin now that the Post has.
The Democrats will continue the tepid support they have shown. Kennedy, et al, will continue to oppose. The Dems just don't dare adopt a hard opposition stance.
Conclusion? I would hire Powell to sell ice boxes to eskimos. Hat's off to the Secretary of State! |
