As a matter of fact, Chinese can buy 24K gold jewelry in store for the last 20+ years, which is really not that much different from the real gold (except somewhat more expensive), and have some utilization value too. 14k and 18k gold jewelry have never been popular in China. The increasing gold price has much more to do with the possibility of war and inflation, and the possible relocation of the foreign reserves of China and other gov. than with ordinary Chinese buying gold. Few Chinese want some solid gold before they can have all those fancy electronic "toys" and nice/bigger house/appartment, and a car.
