Any sanactions imposed by the US government against another country, should not affect any Canadian companies, as they make their own foreign policies as a soverign nation and not necessariy follow the US. For example, look what happend in Cuba, the US imposed sanctions againt Castro, and inspite of it the Canadians are all over Cuba.
In Myannmar's (erstwhile Burma) case, there has been a concerted effort on the part of US government and the public to boycott this country, as they have a repressive military junta who has been ruling the country for a while. There is also an active democracy-movement within the country lead by the nobel laureate Ms. Suu Kyi (pron. Sue Chi), and she has been calling on world leaders to boycott the country so that they might be allowed to have free democratic elections. The pressure tactics mostly by the US govt and public got PEPSI out of the country,i don't know who else.
In my humble opinion, US wouldn't sanction the Indonesian govt, as we have too much at state in Indonesia, even though they don't have a truly democratic government and even if they did, it is unlikely that Canadians would follow suit. Oh, and besides, we can use the fat campaign contributions from Indonesians now, can't we ? |
