George,

The Chechnya comparison is valid. W/R/T our planned entanglement in Iraqi occupation, we might also consider the peculiar nature of imperial occupations in Afghanistan.

The example of Russia's failure to extract itself except at huge cost after an easy entry into Afghanistan was but a later day example of the wars of attrition that are a specialty in Afghanistan.

Imperial Britain marched an army of 17,000 into Afghanistan in April, 1939. In 1842, the sole survivor walked out of Afghanistan, unarmed.

Our imperial forces are being sniped at and mined today in Afghanistan. The same fate will befall them in Iraq.
