The realpolitic operators in Washington were arming and aiding both sides in an internecine conflict that was designed to weaken both sides and thereby strengthen the U.S. position in the region. Re: For reasons which are not entirely clear, the U.S. did not engage in either a covert or overt effort to support either the Kurdish rebels in the North nor the opposition in southern Iraq Whoever wrote this is either a bold faced liar or a complete dolt. The game was the same in the aftermath of the Gulf War. Bush I cynically worked to maintain the delicate balances within Iraq, keeping all elements weak, thereby increasing U.S. control of the region.
