LOL! Classic bafflegag from the media. The American aim is perfectly obvious. The realpolitic operators in Washington were arming and aiding both sides in an internecine conflict that was designed to weaken both sides and thereby strengthen the U.S. position in the region.

Whoever wrote this is either a bold faced liar or a complete dolt. The game was the same in the aftermath of the Gulf War. Bush I cynically worked to maintain the delicate balances within Iraq, keeping all elements weak, thereby increasing U.S. control of the region.
