Derek - Re: National's Fab Capability

Nastional has one 8 inch fab in Santa Clara primarily used for advanced development. They are currently expanding this to target a new 0.35 micron process, initially. Subsequently, they will upgrade to 0.25 and 0.18 micron processes - as a longer term development.

In the short term, IBM will most certainly continue to supply 6x86MX and MediaGX chips.

From the wording of the merger announcement, I would predict that National does not want to duke it out with Intel in the high end CPU race. Halla tried that when he was at LSI Logic. He learned his lesson. Ergo, the 6x86MX may be "deemphasized" after the merger - in November.

National has always been known as a "low cost producer", so I would expect the MediaGX might be their focus - and follow on devices to this product.
