The reason you go through a thorough investigation is so that you have conviction, either to hold long or hold short. If you know first hand from your own research what is going on in a company then if you find yourself holding a position that temporarily moves against you then you have the conviction to hold. It's hardly a futile exercise if it winds up supporting what you suspect to be true.
