Oh, I know what an el toro is. Although I've only sailed one once.

When the Palo Alto Yacht Club was in Palo Alto, they sponsored an el toro race up in the north bay. Most boats sailed to the north bay. Larger boats went along as a safety escort. I did it one year.

You sailed an el toro on the north bay? You and Jorj must get along well. You both have a death wish. :-)

Look, I remember once when I just sailing from Palo Alto to Redwood City and we got caught in an unpredicted blow. My "crew" was my wife. I say "crew" because she was mostly moveable ballast. I didn't dare even think about giving her the stick in that wind. The motor was an outboard with pull cord to start it. She wasn't strong to start it and I couldn't do it with one hand. I HAD to head up some to keep the heel in control. That left the jib flapping. She couldn't pull the jibsheets in enough to stop it- -even with a winch. So the jib flapped.

It wasn't a sail anymore when we reached some shelter in the Redwood City channel; it was tatters. So I got to buy a new jib.

Better than the alternative, though.
