OK, so they sent out someone on a rope. that person was able to physically view the underside of the wing, and see the damaged tiles and/or landing gear door area. Pictures could have been taken and sent to Houston. What could have been done? Would the damage have indicated the eventual destruction, or was it comparable to other damage suffered by other shuttles that landed safely?
Would NASA have decided to keep them aloft longer while rushing Atlantis to the launch pad in a rescue attempt> Wouldn't this have jeopardized two shuttles and crews? Agree, doing nothing, with the benefit of hindsight, sounds criminal. But in real time, what were the choices? could a different entry trajectory been tried? larry
