Third Rig Commences Drilling

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 2003--Southwestern Resources Corp. (TSX:SWG - News) is pleased to announce that the third diamond rig has commenced drilling at the Boka 1 North Gold Zone. The Company is also in discussions with its drilling contractor to mobilize additional rigs to China to speed up the definition of this large gold system.
As previously announced, hole B02-01 was completed at 273.6 metres. B02-02 was abandoned at 226.9 metres due to core loss in the mineralized zone. Hole B02-02 entered mineralization characterized by a heavy stockwork at 67.05 metres and was in mineralization to the bottom of the hole. Visible gold in black slate was observed at 127.45 metres and numerous sections of electrum (white gold) were also observed. Hole B02-02 has been twinned with hole B03-02A which entered the same mineralized zone as B02-02 at 56.8 metres. Visible gold was observed at 60.55 metres and electrum (white gold) was observed in a number of intervals within the mineralized section. Hole B03-03 is currently drilling at 243 metres and is planned to go to 350 metres.
Holes B02-01 and B02-02 have been split and 2.5 tonnes of samples sent for analysis to ALS Chemex Vancouver. In addition, a total of 675 tunnel panel samples are being analyzed at the Langfang Institute. Ten additional drill pads are being prepared at Boka 1 North and Boka 1 South. Samples shipped to the Langfang lab were delayed due to the Chinese New Years celebration and drill core samples are now expected to be prepped at Langfang within a week and received by ALS Chemex in Vancouver by mid-February where they will be screen fire assayed.
The Company is in discussions with several North American laboratories about setting up a facility to do screen fire assaying in China to facilitate a faster turn around for assay results from the drilling program.
Quality Control
Southwestern has implemented a quality control program to ensure best practice in lithogeochemical sampling and analysis of tunnel and drill core samples.
All samples are shipped directly in security sealed bags to the Langfang Institute of Geochemical and Geophysical Exploration (Certification ISO 9001), a well regarded analytical laboratory in Langfang, Hebei Province, approximately 60 kilometres from Beijing. Drill core samples are prepped to -10 mesh at the Langfang laboratory and one kilogram split samples are airfreighted to Vancouver, BC for screen fire assay by ALS Chemex Laboratories. Exploration samples are assayed by conventional methods at the Langfang lab and are digested in an aqua regia acid digestion and gold, silver, copper, nickel, arsenic, antimony and bismuth are analyzed by atomic absorption.
The Company submits its own standards as a measure of the accuracy of the analysis. Field duplicates and pulp duplicates are routinely analyzed for precision at ALS Chemex located in Vancouver, BC. ALS Chemex is an ISO 9001:2000 registered laboratory and is preparing for ISO 17025 certification.
The exploration program is being carried out by Dr. Charlie Cheng, PhD (University of British Columbia) under the direct supervision of Mr. John Paterson (Member, AUSIMM-and therefore the competent person for the Project), President of Southwestern Resources Corp.
The Company's website (www.swgold.com) contains plan and longitudinal sections of the Boka 1 zone, including the current location of drill holes, the distribution of tunnels and a number of photographs of the mineralized horizon.
Southwestern Resources Corp. is exploring in several countries for precious and base metals. The Company has a number of significant joint ventures. Southwestern also explores for diamonds through its 34.3% owned affiliate, Canabrava Diamond Corporation.
Some of the statements in this news release contain forward-looking information, which involves inherent risk and uncertainty affecting the business of the Company. Actual results may differ materially from those currently anticipated in such statements.
