Diamond Multimedia's Fire GL 4000 Now Available in Micron Electronics' Powerdigm XLI systems

Business Wire - July 28, 1997 09:04

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 1997--Diamond Multimedia Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:DIMD), a leader in Internet multimedia acceleration, announced today that Micron Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:MUEI) has chosen its Fire GL 4000 as a professional 3D graphics accelerator option for its Micron Powerdigm XLI line of high-end workstations.

"Micron already offers either the Fire GL 1000 or Fire GL 3000 as professional 3D graphics options for their Powerdigm systems," said Scott Holt, senior vice president of sales at Diamond Multimedia. "The Fire GL 4000, the latest in this award-winning graphics line, provides an even broader range of price and performance to Micron's customers."

"With dual Pentium Pro processors, a SCSI host adapter and Windows NT 4.0, the Powerdigm systems can provide 3D animators and CAD users with as much as twice the connection capability and four times the performance. By adding a Fire GL 4000 to handle the 3D graphics acceleration, we can provide customers with workstation performance at PC prices," said Brian Klene, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Micron.

Powered by the 3DPro/2mp graphics chipset from Mitsubishi and a rendering processor based on Evans and Sutherland's REALimage technology, Diamond Multimedia's Fire GL 4000 delivers accelerated 3D and 2D for workstation level performance on the PC. By off-loading key 3D functions from the CPU, the Fire GL 4000 eliminates common bottlenecks found in the 3D pipeline and is capable of processing up to two million polygons per second in real-time. The Fire GL 4000 offers API support for OpenGL and Autodesk's Heidi when used in a Windows NT 4.0 environment. The Fire GL 4000 is equipped with 15 MB of high performance 3D-RAM graphics memory for frame and z-buffering and up to 16 MB of cached DRAM for the texture buffer.
