Yeah, lots of thoughts. You wouldn't believe the arguments at UH and Honolulu in general. Many issues involved--lots of racism. Verrry touchy. One of the problems is that land in Hawaii is soooo valuable. Its not like you can give the Native Hawaiians a couple of million acres of land that no one in their right mind would choose to live on like you could with Native Americans. Plus an awful lot of things have happened and changed since Hawaii was illegally seized and annexed. Did you know that roughly 95% of the Native Hawaiians died within 100 years of Captain Cook's landing. Measles and syphillis were the 2 biggest killers, I believe. No immunity.

One thing they are talking about is giving the Hawaiians back about 1.4M acres of land which has been held in trust for them by the feds and the state, but which have been used for other purposes. I have doubts that much will happen because of the high values involved. We will see. There is also the problem of trying to determine what exactly constitues a "Native Hawaiian." There are about 200K "part" Hawaiians left. So proof requires lots of ancestral documentation and blood quantum computations. Of course Hawaiians have traditionally been an oral culture, so the problem is compounded. See what I mean about the complexities? And of course the powers that be don't want to give up any of their resources or authority.
