But that's the point. The bean counters don't matter at all when it comes to making the company successful.

So why should something that impacts only the counting of beans hurt a company so much?

You can't have it both ways. If the bean counters really don't matter all that much, as you say--and I agree--then counting the beans a different way won't make a company unsuccessful all of a sudden.
