Fed Will Close 5 Offices, Cut Jobs to Slim Check Clearing Thu Feb 6, 1:45 PM ET By Rebecca Christie WASHINGTON -- The Federal Reserve (news - web sites) System plans to close five regional offices and eliminate hundreds of jobs in an effort to streamline its check-clearing operations, the Fed said Thursday. Declining check volumes and technology advances prompted the changes, which Fed officials said will affect almost 1,300 positions throughout the system. The Fed expects its check-clearing work force to fall by 400 when the transition is completed, or about 8% of its check-clearing staff. . . story.news.yahoo.com
