KDDI launches BREW handset

pmn.co.uk

05 February 2003 -- PMN -- KDDI, Japan's second largest operator, has announced it will offer a BREW handset manufactured by Toshiba as part of a broad strategic move to support Qualcomm's application technology. KDDI is working with partners in Japan, China and Korea, including Qualcomm and IBM, to spur adoption of BREW technology.

Users will be able to download applications using KDDI's CDMA2000 1x network and run them locally on the handset. KDDI will charge YEN 300 for access to the BREW service and additional fees for data transmission and subscriptions to individual applications, including mapping, buddy finders and messaging.

KDDI also intends to work closely with IBM Japan to market BREW technology to enterprise customers. The companies will promote BREW as a secure method of extending advanced applications to the mobile environment.

Toshiba's A5304T includes a wide range of advanced features, including video recording, GPS, two colour screens and advanced audio. KDDI hopes that by working with partners outside Japan it will encourage the rapid development of third party applications for BREW.
