The founding fathers developed the concept of the Electoral College in order to reduce voter fraud, discourage the development of third parties, and provide a clearer view of the winner in tight national races.

However, in the 2000 election, the presidential race was tight not only on the national level but with many state races as well. In addition, voter fraud was very much apparent especially in FLA. And instead of "magnifying" the winner's margin of the popular vote as it was intended, in the 2000 election, the EC magnified the margin of the loser, and made him the winner. So the EC did not do what it was supposed to do.

The above reasons coupled with the fact that the EC discourages the development of third parties at a time when the two main parties have become more centrist and don't represent adequately sizeable minorities like environmentalists led to an amendment to the Constitution in 1977. However, it never got ratified.

Its for the reasons above that many, including me, consider the EC to be anachronism that doesn't work properly.
