I remember reading somewhere that one of their goals was to essentially 'force' a candidate to campaign in many, if not most, of the colonies, rather than just the populous ones. That was particularly important back then when travel from state to state was not a quick plane-hop but rather a gruelling horse-drawn affair.

I think it still makes perfect sense, otherwise, the northwest and/or the heartland (or pick your own less populous region) might get overlooked altogether next election...
