Jacob,

You are almost funny - giving Paul a hard time for not recognizing that this war is like Vietnam.

The fact is it isn't - it is a network war aided by some Governments and some wealthy muslims.

Its as different from Vietnam as Vietnam was from Korea or WW2.

The next part of your thesis seems to be that we win the hearts and minds of the arab street - to cut off the source of their recruits. The reality is the arab street is not a European street in 1945 where a Marshal Plan can win hearts and minds. Its an environment that will respect us only if we stand up and crush those who are trying to undo us - witness the fear circulating there after the predator strike in Yemen.

During Vietnam our leaders viewed the war from a WW2 and Cold War mindset and ignored all the signals telling them what was really happening. They fought Vietnam with Korean War logic and tactics.

During this war, many opponents (I leave out actual pacifists) are protesting with a Vietnam War mindset and tactics.
